Gripping and powerful, anti-hero Arthur’s battle for inclusion resonates on a disturbing level.

Joaquin Phoenix dons an uncomfortable, piercing laugh as he convincingly depicts the Joker’s descent into madness. This gritty origin story is a breath of fresh air, illustrating a unique perspective on mental illness as it follows the struggle of a failing comedian in a poverty-struck 1980s Gotham.
For the first time, DC fans are able to immerse themselves in the Joker’s unique and tragic story. Battling with psychosis and abuse from all who surround him, we follow his plight as he stumbles from one misadventure to the next.
The surprisingly non-sensationalised depiction of his struggle engages the viewer within their psyche, as they relate on a deep level. I found myself feeling a lot of empathy for the character, rationalising his actions throughout.
Joker did well to reflect on a struggle more realistic and human than most DC films, avoiding any heavily fictionalised character traits or plot points.

Todd Phillips’ unique interpretation of DC’s best super villain emanated pure genius. The production and quality of writing did well to conceal the limited budget, which was significantly low for the ‘superhero’ genre.
Straying from the traditionally dark DC colour scheme, Joker’s unusually vibrant palette powerfully contrasts with the emotionally dark themes. Its unusual thought-provoking atmosphere allows the viewer to experience Arthur’s delusions first-hand.
The stand-alone raises many questions about modern society, highlighting issues of political unrest and terrorism. The viewer is left in anticipation as the story walks a fine line between reality and fiction.
Due to the high writing quality, production and showmanship, I was left deeply impressed and excited by this psychological masterpiece. Constantly pushing me outside my comfort zone, this film has had the power to stay with me long after the end credits. To put it simply, I loved it!
